A class action lawsuit has been filed against the two companies regarding the Cosco Bay area oil spill of November 2007. The lawsuit was filed in the Northern District of California on behalf of commercial fishing operators who suffered economic injury as a result of the spill and claims Regal Stone, Ltd. and Hanjin Shipping, Co., Ltd.'s negligence caused commercial fishermen and related operators to lose millions and millions of dollars during this critical fishing season.
The accident occurred on November 7, 2007 when the cargo ship Cosco Busan spilled 58,000 gallons of bunker fuel into San Francisco Bay after hitting the Bay Bridge. After delaying departure 90 minutes due to heavy fog, Cota guides the ship at 11 knots toward the Bay Bridge. The vessel's radar fails and tires to use electronic charts. Coast Guard radar operators advise that the ship is off course and moving parallel to the bridge. The ship suddenly turns right and strikes the Delta tower of the bridge with a glancing blow, ripping a 100-foot-long gash in its hull and two fuel tanks.
