33 Banks
A class action lawsuit has been filed against of 33 banks that helped to fund Saddam Hussein's chemical weapons prior to the first Gulf War in 1991. The suit was filed by 15 US ex-servicemen who claim that they have suffered various health problems due to their exposure to chemical weapons during the war, and they are acting on behalf of "all those similarly affected", and are claiming unspecified punitive damages for alleged "wanton and reckless or malicious" conduct.
Some of the defendants in the suit include: Westpac, Bank of New Zealand, taken over by the National Australia Bank, Lloyds TSB, National Westminster Bank, Barclays, Banque National de Paris, ABN Amro, Bank of Toyko Mitsubishi and Sumitomo Bank. The suit also names 11 other defendants who supplied chemical and specialized manufacturing equipment to the Iraqi regime.
