St. Louis, MO: Certain Banana Boat sun care products have been recalled voluntarily by Energizer Holdings Inc., the maker of Banana Boat sunscreens. The recall was initiated due to adverse event reports of burns caused by the sunscreen igniting on the skin after application. There have been four reported burns in the U.S. and and one in Canada.
Energizer Holdings believes the issue is associated with a design defect in the product delivery system--specifically the size of the spray valve opening--on the Banana Boat products involved in the recall. The spray valve opening on the affected products dispenses more sunscreen than is typical in the industry for continuous sun care sprays. As a result, the product takes longer to dry on the skin than is typical with other continuous sprays. If someone who uses the sunscreen comes into contact with a flame or spark prior to complete drying of the product on the skin, there is a potential for the product to ignite.
Current warnings on the spray form of sunscreen products advise consumers to take care to avoid sources of ignition when using these products including not smoking or using the products in the presence of a flame or spark.
