A class action law suit filed in the Arkansas Supreme Court alleges that Arkansas school teachers were not fully paid for the time they worked.
The lead plaintiff filed a complaint for breach of contract against the school district in 2003, claiming teachers were not paid for time worked in the morning or for afternoon faculty meetings, and at other times during the day, and that teachers' 30 minute lunch periods were shortened due to teacher duties.
The school district claims most teachers' contracts are based on a daily rate and not an hourly rate, and also said there was no school board policy establishing a fixed number of hours for each working school day. Up to 500 Van Buren teachers could be involved, now that class action status has been established.
