A class action lawsuit has been filed against Associated Industries of Kentucky on behalf of more than 3,700 Kentucky employers. The suit alleges that Associated Industries, an alliance of more than 3,000 companies that promotes business interests, should be held liable for the financial troubles of AIK Comp, the group workers' compensation insurance fund. The suit claims that AIK Comp "is sponsored, operated and controlled by Associated Industries and is used by Associated Industries as a vehicle to market itself to prospective new members and to retain existing members. ... For that reason, Associated Industries caused the premiums for workers' compensation to be set at lower levels than its competitors and at a level so low that AIK Comp could not remain solvent and began to incur fund deficits in the year 1998 and thereafter."
