Kimberling City, MOChristopher M. (not his real name), purchased a 2005 model Toshiba 62 inch DLP television and also convinced his mother and cousin to buy the same model in a smaller size. Now, all three have had to replace the light bulbs in their television sets, and Christopher says he is having even worse problems with his Toshiba television.
The bulb on Christopher's television blew out approximately five to six months after he started using the television. He says he was aware that this could happen because the bulb on his cousin's television blew out about a month earlier. His cousin had phoned him, told him about the exploding bulb and said, "Can you believe this?"
When Christopher's television stopped working, he phoned Toshiba and was told there was a batch of faulty bulbs but Toshiba would ship him a new one. He says they did, and the new bulb worked fine...for approximately six months until the new bulb also exploded. Once again Toshiba said they would replace the bulb, but Christopher, not wanting to wait for the shipment, had a friend do the replacement, which he paid for.
Then, approximately one month ago, Christopher's television started making a "strobe effect," with teeny dotted lines covering the television. An hour after this happened, a blue color rose from the bottom of the television and covered the screen. So far, this problem has not been repaired because none of the service companies in his area are familiar with the company through which Christopher bought his extended warranty.
"I am sitting here with a $3,000 television that I can't watch," Christopher says. "I've replaced the bulb twice and now the light engine is more than likely gone, which is a $1,000 repair. I'm sitting here waiting for a company to repair the television, which I will pay for out-of-pocket and pray for reimbursement. Otherwise, I will have a $4,000 television that will likely give me more problems. I am very frustrated. I've blown two bulbs and now I have another issue. I'm looking at having to pay $400 for bulbs every year."
In the meantime, the bulb on Christopher's mother's television has also blown out. "There were three units that I know of that blew the bulbs, and two of the three televisions also required major repairs," Christopher says. "I'm not going to spend $400 every year to replace a bulb that should last 4,000-5,000 viewing hours when I'm nowhere near that. Toshiba should step up if there are issues with these televisions and do right by their customers, who have spent money on these televisions. They should give us all lifetime bulb replacements."
Steven R. (not his real name) in Wisconsin says he was going to sell his Toshiba television, until he learned that the bulb problem is ongoing and decided he could not do that to another person. His Toshiba television was purchased on February 10, 2007 and he was told he would get around 6,000 hours of life out of the light bulb. Unfortunately, his bulb blew out on August 15, 2007. Toshiba replaced the lamp, but it took almost a week for the new bulb to be put in.
Then, on January 25, 2008, the new bulb burnt out. Again it took a week for the new bulb to be put in. Steven says that when he called Toshiba they had one excuse after another for why the bulbs did not work. When an acquaintance researched Toshiba televisions, he learned that there was an ongoing problem with the bulbs.
Steven says each of his bulbs only lasted around 700 hours, nowhere near the 6,000 hours promised by the sales representative. "It's going to cost around $500 a year to run this television," Steven says. "There's no way I'm going to pay for two lamps per year. I'm extremely dissatisfied with the Toshiba problem and misrepresentation about bulb hours. My experience is that I have to replace two lamps per year. Once the warranty is up, it's up to the consumer to pay for the lamps. Plus, if you pay for DirecTV, you lose that money. I pay for DirecTV and that was the only television in my house, so I couldn't watch it for a week both times the bulb blew."
Consumers who purchased Toshiba DLP televisions are now investigating the possibility of a lawsuit against Toshiba, alleging that the company misrepresented the lifespan of the bulbs to consumers. Many consumers believed the bulbs should have lasted anywhere from 5,000 hours to 8,000 hours when in actuality the bulbs lasted less than half that time.
If you have suffered damages in this defective product case, please contact a lawyer involved in a possible [Toshiba DLP Television Lawsuit] to review your case at no cost or obligation.
I have a Toshiba 65" DLP 167 also. Bought it in May 2007 from Best Buy in the Chicago area. I have replaced the chip for the white dot issue. Then also the bulb, or lamp engine as it's called. Got a generic one for about $60 off of the Internet and followed the online instructions and replaced it myself. Lest I pay full price of about $200 for name brand replacement, and have a technician pop it in for another $200 for a service call. Now reading through all of these burnt out bulb issues other people have posted, it sounds to me like they also have burnt out fans also, and don't know it, and how to check, replace, and troubleshoot bad fans. Bulbs should last far longer with proper working fans cooling them. You still need to do more research guys !!! Which at the same time, I agree with you, that you should have a better trouble free product for your money.

Years ago in school I studied about how planned obsolescence works. That is, build something to *not* last so customers are forced to buy replacement parts. I'm am 100% certain Toshiba has employed this strategy. Either this or they outsourced to some low end facility in another country where quality control means nothing. My tally: the 2 replacement bulbs I had each lasted approximately 3 months. C'mon, let's sue these scum so that they don't make us hard-working folks part with our hard-earned money for something that lasts 1/10 the time it should. Complete joke. Am going to give myself one more bulb purchase. Am never buying another Toshiba when this 3rd one fails, period!

I bought a 65in HM167 based on a Consumers Reports Best Buy recommendation. I have also had the blown bulb issue and have been bitten by the "White Dot" plague. I did not realize that it is epidemic until I found a few web sites. It is a shame that a supposed quality company turned their back on the consumers that supported them. I was also a shareholder of Toshiba and have sold my stock. Moral of the story is that even Consumers reports gets fooled. When I fill out my annual Consumers Report questionaire I will be sure to make my feelings known about this "White Dot Elephant"

I have had my 65 inch dlp since may 2007 bought if off tigerdirect.com. Saw it in circuit city for 2200. extended warrenty 600 stand 400 then taxes came to the neighborhood of 3300 if I bought it from them.
tigerdirect.com with shipping 1900.00 no taxes & no extended warrenty.
lamp blew within the 1st month but that was my failt. no issues with it until that last 4 months with the white dots popping up it's the chip inside the light engine. it's a little tricky to replace on your own. I suggest calling a local tv repair company. call around one place told me between 600 to 800 I called a 2nd place this morning they are telling me no more then 400.00 so I think im going with them
I'm in Rochester ny I'm glad I took the time to call around

I bought the Toshiba 65hm167 in 2008. Its completely covered in white dots. TOSHIBA blocked me from the forums and when I call the regular guys run my name and wont talk to me. I think they should fix it. The electronics lemon law in my state states that if an electronic item sold has a feature or selling point displayed on the box it came in then that part should be warrantied for 7 years after purchase. My box was covered with Texas instruments DLP TECHNOLOGY all over it. Im very upset with this company and have lost all faith in them. Is there an ongoing or impending class action suit going on now?

One more "never again" ex-Toshiba customer here. Started out of the box with no owner's manual. Toshiba told me to download one from an online source, except there was no manual for my model anywhere. With that bizarre , non-standard menu, it was a week before it was finally set up correctly.
Now 6 months old, the screen has suddenly dimmed to half it's original brightness, with no fix coming with any menu options. ( HDMI connection since day 1 )
Looking online , I found at least a dozen more comments with similar problems, and no help or recourse from the company.

I too have been scammed by Toshiba on my 65 inch t.v. purchased in 2006. my story 4 lamps, crackling speaker repairs, 2 bad cooling fans and yesterday my dlp color light engine has failed. My Toshiba t.v. is sitting on my front porch with a sign on it for all my neighbors to see it reads"Toshiba what a piece of junk don't buy one". I to am out over $2000.00 dollars for a t.v. that has lasted approx 6 yrs. I will never buy another Toshiba product in my life time. The company will not respond and quite honestly I am so screwed because I don't have any money for a new set. I have been listening to the radio every night. Take it from me Toshiba absolutely sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Toshiba model 65hm167 purchased in 2007, Circuit City going out of business. Great price, wrong tv. I have replaced a bulb about once a year. The fan seems to shut down alot. The last time the bulb exploded, glass everywhere. Removed the bulb, cleaned up the glass, put in a new bulb. I will put the cost of the next bulb toward a new tv.Just waiting for this one to burn out. No more Toshiba for me.

Same problem here. My 65inch DLP worked fine for 3 years. Then the bulb exploded. Replaced it. 7 months later bulb exploded. Replaced it. 5 months later bulb exploded. Replace it. now 8 months later and bulb exploded. This tv is 4 years and 8month old but I am out 450 dollars in Toshiba bulbs and now another $150 is going out the door. Of course I had a 3 year warranty and the bulb blew about 3 weeks past the expiration date. This tv is going in the basement for the kids. I will never by a Toshiba again. Bought it cause of a great deal and the name recognition. I did not know 65 inch DLP tv had only a 5 year shelf life. Add me to the list.

I have a Toshiba 65in. dlp tv. Recently replaced the bulb but the tv is 5 yrs. old and I expected that. About 6 weeks ago I noticed the dead pixel, started with 1. I read in the owners manual that this is a structural property of DLP technology and not a sign of malfunction. Such pixels are not visible when viewed from a normal viewing distance. Now I have at least 400 dead pixels and you could view them from across the street. 5 yrs. on an $1800 tv. sucks. I know Toshiba won't do anything for this piece of crap, but I will, I'll never buy anything with the Toshiba name on it and I'll make sure everyone I know doesn't buy any of their products either.

I have a 65HM 167 model toshiba TV with the white dots. Called Toshiba and they gave me a case number. Called a few times and they refused to help. Wrote a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Toshiba still refused to help with the problem. I will file a complaint with the NYS Attorney Generals office. Who knows maybe he owns a "bad Toshiba". What's amazing is they keep telling me I'm the only person complaining about this problem. I keep telling them to check out their web site. So.. add me to a class action suit. Thanks

Purchased and installed Toshiba 65HM167 DLP on August 2007. I've been one of the lucky few who had a good Projector Bulb that lasted for 4 years and 4 months - bulb finally popped (with a loud bang) in October 2011. Replaced the bulb, and then the DLP chip began to exhibit the "White Dots" (failed DLP mirrors) problem within a day or two of installing the new Toshiba Direct OEM projector bulb. The two problems should Not be related, but I found it strangely coincidental. I would have hoped this TV would last me at least another 4 years. Please add me to your list of plaintiffs for a class action suit and contact me if anything can be done to get a replacment or refund.
Thank You.

All these stories sound so much alike..Toshiba is unwilling to rectify a problem that most likely resulted in millions of dollars in profit. I have used Toshiba products for years from satellite computers to TVs to you name it. i think the big moral of the story is don't buy Toshiba product if they are unwilling to support it. Ive always had the greatest of luck with Samsung. i hope we can force Toshiba with us the masses to fix this problem on their dime... Second tube to blow... They don't make em like they used too. My folks have a TV that's 20 years old works just fine...

Model#: 46HM95. Have replaced bulb 4 times. Called Toshiba. Spoke with 9 people in two (2) days. Toshiba MAY replace bulb but, is unable to do anything else. What good does replacing bulb do if it will blow out in a few hours? Definitely a defective LEMON! Toshiba will not correct this problem. Unable to use tv. Out of pocket already approx. $3,500.00 and counting! $2,500.00 for tv and $1,000 in bulbs.
Please add me to your list of complaints and contact me if anything can be done to get a replacement or refund. PLEASE!

i have a 62mx195 dlp tv that the light engine is failing, i contacted toshiba and they told me that according to their records there has been no problem with the light engines on those particular tv's, i even tried to convince them to split the cost to repair the unit they would not help. if there is any other owners of this particular model please contact me at my email-target2219@yahoo.com because they must realize that with the amount of money spent they should be more willing to meet consumers half way. also i spoke with some technicians about this matter and they also feel that this is too soon for these units to be failing like this and the amount of people having to replace these units. i also will tell anybody reading this DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM TOSHIBA AND IF YOU DID AS LONG AS YOU OWN IT NEVER LET YOUR WARRANTY EXPIRE BECAUSE THESE UNITS ARE LIKE CARS THEY ALWAYS BREAK DOWN AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRES.

I have replaced 11 lamps and toshiba canada says that the light engine that is recalled in the U.S. model # 52hm84 is diffrent from the 52hm84 canadian model. As I looked into where the light engine was built, this is a third party supply issue. I tried to contact Toshiba U.S. in California and I got the run around there as well as in Canada. So as a result I agree there should be a class action law suit against toshiba.

We have the same problem and have not been able to use our TV also. Ours is a Toshiba DLP 65 inch series number HM167/117. We have bought the lamp several times and it keeps blewing out. It is now on a steady green light and has been like this for over two years. I have not been able to have it fixed due to financial hardship and the only thing that has been wrong with it is that we cannot see it, we can hear it but when we replace the lamp it lasts literally no joke several weeks if we ae lucky and it would blow out. We have resulted in having a very small TV in front of it so we can see TV in the family room. Please add me to your list of complainants and contact me if anything can be done to get a replacment or refund.
