The Michigan Court of Appeals has ruled that an 8-year-old class action filed in Washtenaw County by female prisoners may proceed. The suit alleges sexual assault and abuse at the hands of male staff at state prisons. The suit includes about 500 female prisoners who claim they had been victims of sexual misconduct since 1993, and the court ruled that the plaintiffs can proceed with their claims either as violations of the Michigan Civil Rights Act or the Michigan Constitution.
