An Ontario judge has ruled that class action status may be sought for a lawsuit filed against St. Jude Medical, the maker of silver-coated Silzone mechanical heart valves. The valves, which were coated in silver to reduce the rate of infection, were implanted in about 2,300 Canadians between 1997 and 2000. They were recalled in 2000, three years after being introduced, when it was discovered that they were making people sick. The suit alleges that the company was negligent in its research and development of the valve, and that the company marketed the product without proper testing.
