Class action status has been granted to a suit filed in October 2001 on behalf of The ARC/Connecticut and 26 mentally retarded people who have been on a waiting list for state services and housing. The suit will be expanded to include all 1,700 people on the state waiting list, some of whom have been on the DMR waiting list for up to 15 years and "desperately need housing".
The suit is claming that by keeping these people on waiting lists for years at a time, the state is denying them their rights under federal law which requires states to integrate people with disabilities into communities.
