A class action lawsuit has been certified and will allowed to proceed against the Anglican Church and the Canadian government on behalf of about 1,400 Ontario Indians. The suit alleges that the plaintiffs were physically and mentally abused at the Anglican Mohawk Institute Residential School in Brantford, Ontario between 1922 and 1969. The suit claims that the school was administered in a way which fostered an atmosphere of fear and brutality with frequent physical abuse. The plaintiffs further claim that they were prohibited from speaking their native language and that they were forced to participate in Christian activities.
