A class action lawsuit has been filed against Sam Goody Stores on behalf of thousands of customers who claim the company deceived them. The suit alleges that the company failed to disclose credit card charges associated with an offer to receive Entertainment Weekly. Also named as defendants in the suit were several subsidiaries of Musicland Stores Corporation, the parent corporation for Sam Goody and the other stores. According to the complaint, the company targeted customers who paid with credit and debit cards, offering them eight free issues of Entertainment Weekly, but not mentioning that a subscription charge would follow unless the customers called a number to cancel. The suit alleges that the publisher of Entertainment Weekly, Time Inc., paid the stores $7 per customer charged. The suit was filed on behalf of all Sam Goody, Suncoast and Media Play customers who had their credit or debit card information improperly disclosed between August 1, 2001 and the date the class-action is certified by the court.
