Class action status has been granted to approximately 2,500 black or Hispanic current and former employees of the New York City Parks Department in their lawsuit against the City. The suit alleges that Parks Commissioner Henry Stern favored white employees over blacks and Hispanics in the Department's hiring practices, assignments, raises and promotions. The suit charges widespread racial discrimination and concentrates on the years from 1995 to 1999.
