Northshore Mining Co.
Class action status has been granted to a lawsuit filed against Northshore Mining Co. on behalf of all female hourly-wage workers employed by Northshore on or after April 24, 1998. The suit was filed on Dec. 3, 1999, claiming that the company engages in discriminatory employment practices. The suit alleges that women have been slower to receive training, promotions and overtime pay than their male co-workers. After a review of the company's records, the plaintiffs found that between 1994 and 2000, female hourly workers at Northshore received an average of $2,920 less regular pay and $821 less overtime pay than their male counterparts. The suit is seeking an injunction to prohibit the company from engaging in discriminatory practices, as well as payment for lost wages, punitive damages and payment for their past and future mental anguish and emotional distress.
