A class action lawsuit has been filed in Jefferson County Circuit Court alleging negligence, conspiracy and fraud pertaining to soaring sewage rates paid by area residents. The lawsuit, which lists 582 defendants, was filed on behalf of all residents and entities of Jefferson County and Alabama who have paid for sewer service anytime from January 1, 1993 to present. The complaint claims that Jefferson County has been charged six times what the prevailing rate is for sewer services that other similar counties would receive at a much lower cost, and that the defendants collectively have repeatedly refused to accept responsibility and are continue to place the burden of digging out of this 3-billion dollar hole on the rate payer. Among the defendants named are current and former Jefferson County board members, and some of the largest banks in the world.
