One of the largest proposed class action cases in history is being launched against naming 55 underwriters including Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse First Boston and 309 tech and Internet companies, including Global Crossing, Agency.com, MP3.com, Buy.com, eToys.com and DrKoop.com.
The companies are being accused of rigging the IPO frenzy of the late 1990s by creating artificial demand for certain stocks and feeding the Internet bubble. Defendants are also being charged with hiding some research analysts' reports, and enriching others.
Millions of investors may be named as plaintiffs, and estimated damages could reach as high as "many billions" of dollars according to plaintiff lead attorney.
