A class action lawsuit has been filed against the church owners for allegedly exposing staff and residents to asbestos. The lawsuit claims several Holy Cross Centre buildings that were renovated in 2002 contained large quantities of the toxic substance. The suit claims asbestos was not properly removed and owners of Holy Cross Centre failed to inform patrons and employees of exposure risks.
The Holy Cross Centre, a privately run complex that includes assisted living units and medical offices, is owned by three Calgary doctors under the company name Enterprise Universal.
Asbestos is a fibrous mineral used for many industrial purposes, but can become hazardous to one's health if inhaled. Once breathed in, asbestos can cause various disease, such as mesothelioma, a deadly cancer of the lungs.
