Several class action lawsuits have been launched on behalf of victims and their families against Epitome Nightclub in Chicago where 21 people died in a stampede on Feb 17, 2003.
The nightclub had a history of problems, including:
The club has its liquor license suspended for five days in January after being caught serving alcohol to a minor.
Since 2000, police have responded to 80 calls at the club, one of which involved the shooting death of a man 13 months ago.
The club has been cited since last April by City inspectors for building and fire code violations, including inadequate exits. When the owners failed to address the violations, a city housing court judge ordered the club vacated, an order that was in effect the night of the tragedy.
The city of Chicago may also be named in the suit .
