Class action status is being sought on behalf hundreds of plaintiffs who claim their civil rights were violated by the city of Detroit when police detained them against their will. The city has already paid $3.4 million dollars to more than 30 people in regards to the now abandoned practice of jailing uncooperative homicide witnesses, however attorneys estimate there could be hundreds more who could join a class action suit. Under the new system, witnesses may only be detained if a court order is obtained.
