A class action lawsuit has been filed against the Cook County Department of Corrections on behalf of mentally ill inmates who are incarcerated at the Cook County Jail. The suit was filed by disability rights advocates, and alleges violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the 14th Amendment. The suit claims that mentally ill inmates are denied access to substance abuse programs, are barred from participating in various supervised community release programs, and are released into the community without any arrangement for access to necessary medication or mental health services. The lead defendants named in the case are John Stroger, the President of the Cook County Board, and Michael Sheahan, the Sheriff of Cook County.
