Two lawsuits seeking class action status have been filed against Georgia-based Choicepoint Inc. and Massachusetts-based Reed Elsevier Inc., the parent company of LexisNexis. The suits were filed in regards to how the state allows public access to drivers' personal information. According the suit, the companies have been obtaining records from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, which is in violation violates the federal Driver Privacy Protection Act. The records include people's names, addresses, birth dates and other personal information.
The federal privacy law prohibits the plaintiffs from suing the state, so they have therefore filed the suits against the companies who are buying the records.
