A billion-dollar class action lawsuit will be filed in Ecuador against ChevronTexaco Corp. on behalf of more than 30,000 Ecuadoreans. The suit is claiming that the California-based oil company has dumped 18.5 billion gallons of toxic wastewater and crude oil in the town of Lago Agrio's land and rivers for more than twenty years. The case has been fought in the US court system for close to ten years, and now jurisdiction will be given to Ecuadorean courts, with the ruling being enforced in the States. The plaintiff's attorney's have estimated the damages to the environment and local health amount for approximately $1 billion dollars.
