A class action lawsuit has been filed in the Quebec Superior Court against Bell Canada on behalf of its customers who were victims of Internet hijacking. The lawsuit is seeking refunds for the possibly thousands of fraud victims whose computers placed expensive long distance phone calls after a hidden program was downloaded without their knowledge or consent.
Bell Canada argues that under international agreements they have no choice but to charge for the overseas calls, and that all customers must pay the bills, even the victims. The complaint claims that Bell Canada has known of the modem dialing scam for at least four years but continued to collect for, and profit from, the overseas calls. The class action is seeking refunds, damages and $200 compensation plus interest, per plaintiff.
