Class action status is being sought in a lawsuit filed against 3M Co. on behalf of the residents of Decatur, Alabama. The suit alleges that according to environmental tests, there are high levels of synthetic chemicals known as sulfonated perfluorochemicals (PFCs) in the soil around the company's plant on State Docks Road in Northwest Decatur. PFCs, which are used in the manufacture of Teflon and many other nonstick and stain-resistant products, are known to cause liver problems, testicular tumors, breast tumors, prostate problems, birth defects and reproductive problems. According to the suit, the presence of these chemicals has damaged the plaintiff's property values, led to possible health effects and caused emotional distress.
