Carlisle Tire & Wheel Co.

A lawsuit has been filed and is seeking class action status against the manufacturer of tires for recreational vehicles. The lawsuit claims the tires are defective and pose a safety risk. The tread on several tires separated while others lost their tread completely and the belts inside unraveled. The allegedly defective tires "impose economic losses on consumers, cause other property damage to their vehicles and create a major inconvenience to recreational travelers."

I have a tandem wheel trailer and two tires last year exploded. This year another tire exploded. I was in the process of changing all the tires. I knelt down and was removing the lug nuts off of the last tire and the tire exploded right in my left ear causing hearing loss and ringing in the ears.

The tires ripped the wheel well out on one side. Had to replace the wiring and plumbing at the wheel well ($600.00). Another one of the blowouts has caused damage to the wheel well that I have not repaired as of yet.

I was returning home from a camping trip towing my 5th wheel. The trailor was well below the maximum weight and the road conditions were dry and sunny. I was travelling at approximately 40-45 mph when the curbside front Carlisle tire exploded violently and without warning. There was no apparent source of puncture, the tire simply failed.

The pieces of tread exploded with such force that they destroyed the wheel well and underside flooring on the trailer. I am currently contacting my insurance company to obtain a quote for repair, which is likely to be in the thousands of dollars range.

I have photographs of the damage and I have retained the wheel and remains of the tire. This was the first trip out with the trailer.

The two tires came apart four days apart and both sides of my trailer along with a stabilizing jack are damaged. I am replacing the other two tires for fear that they will come apart also.

Three of the four Carlisle tires on my boat trailer have exploded when towing my boat. They were properly inflated and had less than 1200 miles on them. The trailer is a 2003 model. The blowouts caused damage to the trailer fenders and made a hole in my boat.
