US Government SHAD Project 112 - Vietnam Vets
October 7 2003
US Government and Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara
A class action lawsuit has been filed against the U.S. government, former Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara, and other government officials on behalf of certain Vietnam War veterans. The suit alleges that the plaintiffs were unknowingly used as test subjects for a chemical and biological warfare experiment in the 1960s, known as SHAD/Project 112. The suit is seeking damages for the cover-up by government officials of the experiments, and for the denial of information to the plaintiffs who were potentially harmed by exposure to chemical and biological agents and simulants. Without knowledge of the testing, the veterans are unable to receive medical treatment. The defendant's motion to dismiss the case was rejected on Tuesday September 30.
I made a claim to the VA for my exposure to Plutonium on Johnston Island in the mid 60's. I was a crew member on a Patrol Squadron based in Hawaii. We used to go to JI to patrol for Russian ships trying to watch tests of biological/chemical weapons which we purportedly did not have. I was 72 when I discovered the plutonium and VX(Project Shad) exposure I had been exposed to years before. I was showing my daughter a few of the places around the world where I had been when we started to read about the clean up on JI from those failed nuclear tests. I've not gotten cancer but a number of strange health issues have happened to me which defy explanation. I made a claim and of course the VA rejected it. Even with our own governments report about the JI contamination as empirical proof he VA believes I was not exposed.

I was part of the original crew aboard the USS Granville Hall. I boarded the ship in San Francisco in 1962 and sailed to our home port of Pearl Hsrbor, Hawaii. I served as a aerographer (meteotologist) until my honorable discharge in 1964. During this tour of duty I and other crew members were exposed to many occasions of chemical exposures created by the spraying of varied biological chemicals from low flying aircraft. During these tests, sampling devises were set out in the deck of the ship for later collection and analyze. The were live monkies on board that were used for testing and civilian researchers for disection of birds that were shot and retrieved from the ocean. Tests were conducted aound uninhabited Johnston Island and other atolls. I have suffered from skin blistering and rashes on my legs and am usually treated by my personal doctor with antibiotics. I have not been able to obtain any assistance from the V.A. I wish there were some avenue of compensation that I could explore.

My father was a Marine, Communications Specialist in Vietnam War and I was conceived shortly after he returned from duty. My Father is still alive, fortunately, after several skin grafts from SHAD P-112. I now have to get checked for the same problems my father has. I believe it is the agents used in the project are genetically passed down to children of the veterans. I am so proud of my Father, and I get checked on a regular basis for skin pre-cancer and have had several procedures and scars, and I am only 48 years old. I do not understand how anyone would use chemicals on human beings so indiscriminately, without any repercussions or concerns for after effects. I just ask and pray that everyone reach out and help other veterans find this page.
